Protecting resale value: 5 habits that matter

1. Skip the automatic tunnel wash

Spinning brushes are the number one cause of the scratches you see on a dealer lot. They drag grit across your paint. One careful wash a month prevents years of that.

2. Clean off bird mess and tree sap the same day

Both eat into the paint within a couple of days when it's warm. Keep a spray bottle and a clean towel in the trunk — one minute now beats a $300 fix later.

3. Take care of what you touch

The wheel, shifter, and door pulls wear out first from hand oils. Keeping sun off the dash stops the cracking that screams "old car." None of it has to look greasy — clean and matte looks factory.

4. Get it coated in year one

A coating on fresh paint costs a lot less than the heavy polishing plus coating you'll need at year three. If you're keeping the car more than two years, it's the best money you'll spend on it.

5. Keep your receipts

Hang on to paperwork for washes, coatings, and polishing. A folder of records gives buyers confidence and helps at trade-in. I write up every job for that reason.
